Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or, ADHD, is one of the most common neurodevelopmental conditions affecting children today. Impulsivity, inattentiveness and challenges focusing on primary tasks are the typical symptoms we picture when discussing ADHD.
While ADHD is often thought of as simply a lack of focus, the reality is more nuanced. Children with ADHD may find traditional classroom settings a difficult place to learn, as there is often a frequent switch in focus and a need for following structured time blocks, which are demands that may feel overwhelming. For students with ADHD, focusing is not just about paying attention; it is about managing and redirecting that attention to the demands of the moment, which is the area of their brains that works differently from someone who is neurotypical.
Educators who understand the brain processes of students with ADHD are able to create a more flexible and supportive learning environment. Here are some ways educators can make this difference.
- Rather than long, multi-step assignments, they would be broken down into smaller, more manageable tasks to help keep focus.
- Incorporating visual aids such as diagrams, colour-coordinated notes and charts may help students retain information more easily.
- Using technology can be a powerful tool for ADHD learners. Interactive learning through apps is often self paced, which gives students more control over their learning style.
- Collaborative learning and working with peers may often holds their attention better than passive listening. Working with other students also helps build necessary communication skills both inside and outside a classroom setting.
Understanding how young learners with ADHD absorb and retain information is crucial to their educational development. By implementing the strategies above, educators can create a dynamic and inclusive learning space, which will not only help ADHD students stay engaged, but help them strive both academically and socially.
